What is The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan?
The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan is a blueprint for our 391-acre Universal City property. The plan includes upgrades and improvements to our production and post production facilities, a revitalized entertainment destination, modern office space and a new residential neighborhood with 35-acres of open space and all connected to transit and without expanding the current property.
These advancements will secure our roles as the world's largest working studio, keeping high-paying production jobs in Los Angeles while adding significant investment and tax revenue to our local economy.
What is Universal City?
Universal City is a 391-acre property owned by NBCUniversal in the San Fernando Valley that encompasses Universal Studios, the largest working studio in the world, along with the leading tourist destination in Los Angeles, Universal Studios Hollywood theme park and CityWalk.
How will this plan benefit Los Angeles?
Along with securing Universal’s role as the world’s largest working studio, in a time of economic uncertainty, The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan boosts the Los Angeles County economy by generating over 31,000 new jobs during the construction period and $2 billion a year in new economic activity from development of the project. Upon completion, The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan generates over 12,000 new full and part-time jobs throughout the county and an additional $26 million in new tax revenue annually to the City and County.
Is the MTA project part of The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan?
No, the MTA project -- called Metro Studio@Lankershim -- is not part of The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan. Thomas Properties Group is the developer of the Metro Studio@Lankershim project. NBCUniversal will be an anchor tenant on the property. However, NBCUniversal is neither the developer nor the only component of The Metro Studio@Lankershim project.
How long will The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan take?
The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan is a long-term blueprint for the success of NBCUniversal and will be developed in stages based on business needs and market conditions. The project is at the beginning stage of a comprehensive environmental and public review process, which will include public hearings by the City and County of Los Angeles.
What if I’m interested in living in the new community?
We are pleased that the residential component of the Plan will include both for sale and rental housing comprised of lofts, townhouses, apartments and condominiums, all with a broad range of price points. As we are still very early in the review and approval process, prices for the homes have not yet been established. What will The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan do to help area congestion?
With a $100 million investment, The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan’s transportation package is the largest private sector investment in transportation in the San Fernando Valley in 25 years and will be a catalyst for improvements throughout the City and County of Los Angeles. We are working with CalTrans, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and world-renowned traffic experts to create a comprehensive plan that includes improvements to more than 100 area intersections, major area freeway improvements, expanding and improving transit connections for employees, visitors and local residents, and connecting Universal Studios, its theme park, offices and the new residential neighborhood to the adjacent MTA transit station on Lankershim Boulevard.
Will Universal still make movies?
Universal Studios is a major center for motion picture and television production and will continue to be with the NBCUniversal Evolution Plan. The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan allows for necessary improvements and upgrades to the studio to secure its place as the largest working studio in the world and the filmmakers' destination of choice which will keep Universal a major area employer producing quality entertainment for years and years to come.
What type of improvements are you making to the studio?
One of the most important parts of The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan is the work being done on the studio. As technologies advance and develop, so do the ways movies are made. As part of our studio evolution we will be creating new, technologically-advanced post production facilities, modern sound stages, relocating the backlot with new and reinvented outdoor sets, designing additional producer bungalows and office space and improving rehearsal stages and studio mill facilities.
What type of improvements are you making to the theme park?
The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan includes a revitalized entertainment destination that includes Universal Studios Hollywood theme park and CityWalk. The future is not about being bigger but ensuring that our entertainment destination remains vital and competitive. Future improvements include new and updated rides and shows including indoor attractions, improving our studio tour, enhanced retail, entertainment and dining options and improved pedestrian connections and parking.
What entity will approve the project and will the public be given a chance to provide input?
The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan is at the early stages of a comprehensive environmental and public review process, which will include many opportunities for public involvement and participation. Since Universal City is located within both the County and City of Los Angeles, The NBCUniversal Evolution Plan will be subject to multiple public hearings in both jurisdictions.
How can I apply for a job created as a result of the NBCUniversal Evolution Plan?

However, as we are very early in the review and approval process, it will be at least two years before any project-related employment opportunities are available.
